Australia is the only island which is a
continent and a country in the world covering a total area of 7.7 million square
kilometers. Australia is the sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China,
the United States of America and Brazil.
Successive migration programs of Australian
Government resulted in people from around 200 countries migrating to Australia,
since the arrival of first fleet of European settlers in 1788. 23% of Australian
population is born overseas and more than 200 languages are spoken. A land of
opportunities and diverse culture
English is the national and
official language of Australia. All Australians are encouraged to read and speak
English. Although, at least 17 per cent of Australians come from a non-English
speaking background and speak another language at home. Australian government
promotes the teaching of other languages in School.
